Alev Bulut

is a Professor of Translation Studies and a member of the academic staff of the English Translation and Interpreting Division of the Department of Translation Studies of the Faculty of Letters of Istanbul University in Turkey. She has a BA in English Language and Literature, MA and PhD in English Language Training. During her 2023–2024 sabbatical, she joined the Faculty of Philology and Translation at the University of Vigo as a visiting scholar. She has published extensively on text-analysis for translation, translating female literary discourse, community interpreting (emergency and disaster interpreting) and news translation. She has been teaching courses in her fields of expertise at graduate and post-graduate levels and advised many graduate and doctoral theses in the field on translation and interpreting, specifically on Community Interpreting, Translation Studies, Translator Training, Gender and Translation and Literary Translation. Among her publications are Çeviride Dil ve Metin (Language and Text in Translation) 2003, Çeviride Ideoloji, Ideolojik Çeviri (Ideology in Translation and Ideological Translation) 2008/ 2018 2nd ed. Tercüme Hatasi!? (Translation Mistake!?) 2015/ 2022, 2nd. ed., Türkiye’de Futbol Çevirmenligi (Football Interpreting in Turkey) 2018. She has translated around 50 titles including novels, short story collections from American and English literature and non-fiction (art history, archaeology, tourism, philosophy and academic articles). She is a Board Member of Çeviri Dernegi (Association of Translation and Interpreting-Turkey), founding Board Member and trainer of ARÇ Association (Emergency and Disaster Interpreting Volunteers) and member of ÇEVBIR (Literary Translators´ Society-Turkey); member of ÇEVBIR Commission for the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence; coordinator (on behalf of Istanbul University between 2017-2024) and member of the national committee (since 2012) responsible for writing Translators’ Vocational Qualifications for MYK (Vocational Qualifications Authority) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
